The speed of poultry processing lines — hundreds of birds per minute in large facilities — makes individual bird monitoring practically impossible without automated systems. Post-stun reflex assessment provides a reliable real-time check but requires trained observers and slows processing lines. CAS systems that achieve unconsciousness before birds enter the processing area remove the real-time stunning monitoring challenge but require investment in capital equipment. Regulatory requirements for stunning effectiveness monitoring that are practically implementable at commercial processing speeds are a priority welfare policy development.
