These objectives are reconciled through good management: animals kept in better conditions with less disease pressure need fewer antibiotics; vaccination programs prevent diseases that would otherwise require treatment; and prompt veterinary diagnosis ensures targeted treatment rather than broad-spectrum prophylaxis. The welfare-positive farm uses fewer antibiotics because its animals are healthier.
