Equine sweat is uniquely high in electrolytes compared to other species, creating specific management needs that affect welfare when working horses lose significant fluid and minerals.
Equine electrolyte welfare is particularly relevant for horses in heavy or prolonged work — endurance horses, eventers, horses working in heat. The unique hypertonic composition of equine sweat means that large sweat losses deplete electrolytes rapidly, affecting muscle function (cramping), gut motility (impaction risk), and thermoregulation (reduced sweating efficiency when depleted). Electrolyte supplementation — through commercial products, salt, or electrolyte-enhanced water — restores these losses, but must always be accompanied by free water access as electrolytes alone without water worsen dehydration. Monitoring sweat volume and color (white frothy sweat indicates significant loss) guides supplementation decisions.
