Private exotic animal ownership creates irreversible welfare harm. Lions, tigers, bears, and primates are unsuitable for private keeping regardless of owner intentions or resources. These animals have space, social, and behavioral requirements that cannot be met in private settings. Cubs obtained for novelty become dangerous adults who spend decades in inadequate conditions. When owners cannot cope, animals are surrendered to overwhelmed sanctuaries, sold to substandard facilities, or euthanized. The welfare harm is predictable, preventable, and perpetuated by inadequate regulation.
