Difficult trailer loading is often treated as a disciplinary problem rather than a welfare issue, but at its root it is a fear response. Horses who resist loading are communicating genuine distress about entering a small, moving, enclosed space. Forcing them in — with ropes, whips, or people pushing from behind — confirms that fear, creates negative associations, and makes future loading harder. Fear-free approaches that use systematic desensitisation and positive reinforcement take longer initially but produce lasting results. A horse that chooses to enter a trailer willingly has a fundamentally different emotional experience of transport.
