How equine metabolic syndrome causes chronic suffering through laminitis and what dietary management can dramatically improve affected horses' lives.
Laminitis is one of the most painful conditions experienced by horses, and for horses with equine metabolic syndrome it is a recurring and often preventable threat. The chronic welfare burden on affected horses — from the pain of active laminitis episodes, from movement restriction during recovery, and from the dietary management required to prevent recurrence — is significant. Yet with appropriate management, many EMS horses live comfortable lives with dramatically reduced episode frequency. The challenge is that the management required — strip grazing or dry-lot turnout, soaked hay, weight monitoring, and often medical support — is time-consuming and requires consistent owner commitment.
