Welfare Considerations

Sea bass welfare presents many of the same challenges as other marine finfish aquaculture: the species is produced in enormous numbers with limited welfare oversight, harvesting methods often cause prolonged distress, and the industry has historically prioritised production metrics over animal wellbeing. The growing evidence for fish sentience and the considerable suffering caused by current harvest methods — particularly live chilling — make welfare reform for sea bass both morally urgent and practically feasible. Electrical stunning before harvest, lower stocking densities, and improved handling protocols are all demonstrably achievable improvements.
