The socialisation window is one of the most important concepts in canine development, and its mismanagement is responsible for immense preventable suffering. Puppies kept isolated for fear of disease, sold from commercial environments with no exposure to normal stimuli, or simply not deliberately socialised during the critical weeks emerge with fear responses that can define their entire lives. Fear-based aggression, chronic anxiety, inability to cope with normal environments — these are the welfare consequences of a missed or inadequate socialisation window. No amount of training in adult life fully compensates for what was not provided in those first critical weeks.
