Welfare Considerations

Disease in shrimp aquaculture causes welfare harm on a vast scale. The conventional response — antibiotic treatment and restocking — does not address the underlying welfare drivers of disease: poor water quality, excessive stocking density, and biosecurity failures. More sustainable and welfare-consistent approaches focus on prevention through improved systems design, water quality management, and selective breeding for disease resistance.
