Welfare Considerations

Duck welfare in meat production is one of the most overlooked areas in farm animal welfare. The scale is enormous — billions of ducks annually — but regulatory attention and consumer awareness are both minimal. Ducks are aquatic animals whose entire physical and psychological wellbeing is connected to water access: they use it for thermoregulation, hygiene, foraging, social behaviour, and eye and nasal cleaning. Farming them intensively without any open water access forces them to live in conditions fundamentally incompatible with their nature. Even basic water provision — enough to immerse the head — significantly improves welfare at modest cost, but this is not standard practice in most duck farming systems.
