Dirty feeders that accumulate mouldy seed and faecal material transmit Trichomonas and Salmonella to large numbers of birds that congregate in one place — potentially causing more harm than would occur without feeding. Poorly positioned feeders near windows kill birds through strikes. Inappropriate food causes nutritional problems. Yet properly managed feeding stations — with regular cleaning, appropriate food, and thoughtful positioning — provide genuine welfare benefits particularly during harsh winter weather when natural food scarcity can be the limiting factor for bird survival.

Clean feeders and surrounding ground weekly with a mild disinfectant solution to prevent disease transmission
Position feeders more than 9 metres from windows or within 1 metre (reducing fatal collision speed)
