How enriched colony cages differ from battery cages, what welfare improvements they offer, and where their limitations remain.
Enriched colony cages represent genuine progress from battery cages while remaining significantly below what hens need for good welfare. The nest boxes, perches, and substrate provided allow hens to express behaviours that were completely prevented in barren cages, and welfare indicators are measurably improved. However, the space provision remains severely limiting — 750 cm2 is approximately an A4 page per hen — and the quality of enrichment is often minimal. The welfare science is unambiguous that free-range and barn systems, when well managed, provide substantially better welfare than any caged system. The direction of travel — toward cage-free commitments — is welfare-positive, and consumer and retailer pressure continues to accelerate this transition.
