Rhinoceros welfare in captivity centres on providing for the distinct needs of five very different species. White rhinos are relatively social and can be managed in groups, while black rhinos are solitary and may injure each other in forced proximity. All species require mud wallow access for thermoregulation and skin care, and the quality of substrate, shade provision, and social arrangement are primary determinants of welfare. Protected contact systems, where keepers train rhinos using positive reinforcement without physical dominance, have dramatically improved the ability to provide veterinary care and enrichment while maintaining keeper safety.
