Canine parvovirus causes some of the most extreme acute suffering seen in companion animal medicine — uncontrolled vomiting and haemorrhagic diarrhoea, severe dehydration, and often death within days. In a vaccinated dog population, this disease is essentially preventable; its continued prevalence reflects failures in vaccine access, owner awareness, and puppy welfare standards in the early weeks of life. The disease is disproportionately associated with puppies from low-welfare sources who receive inadequate early health care. Vaccination is the single most impactful welfare intervention for preventing parvovirus, and ensuring puppies are fully vaccinated before their socialisation window closes represents a genuine welfare dilemma in high-prevalence areas.
