Thunderstorm desensitisation is one of the most evidence-based welfare interventions for dogs with noise phobia, yet it requires systematic planning and patience that many owners underestimate. The desensitisation process works by gradually pairing storm sounds, at comfortable volumes, with highly positive experiences — the dog's most valued food, favourite games, relaxed attention. Over many sessions, the conditioned association between storm sounds and fear is slowly replaced by a different association. This approach requires commitment because progress is gradual and the training must be sustained across sessions. But for dogs with severe thunderstorm phobia, the welfare benefit — measured in years of reduced seasonal terror — is enormous.
