Shrimp slaughter welfare represents one of the most significant unaddressed welfare issues in food production, given both the scale of production — trillions of individual animals annually — and the growing evidence for shrimp sentience. The current standard of live boiling or icing without prior stunning would be considered unacceptable if applied to vertebrates at the same scale. The technical solutions exist: electrical stunning systems can render shrimp insensible before killing at low additional cost. The barrier is regulatory — no jurisdiction has yet required humane slaughter for shrimp — and commercial — producers have no incentive to invest without requirement or consumer pressure. Building consumer awareness and regulatory momentum are the primary levers available.
