How to ensure that joint injections in horses serve welfare rather than enabling competition at the expense of horse health.
Joint injection ethics requires honest evaluation of whether a given injection is being used to help a horse in genuine pain to move more comfortably, or to mask pain that should indicate rest. These purposes are sometimes indistinguishable from the outside, but the intent and outcome differ profoundly in welfare terms. A horse whose genuine arthritis pain is managed appropriately has improved welfare; a horse injected to compete through an injury that needs rest has welfare compromised by the injection. The growing trend of pre-competition injection declaration and testing reflects the equestrian sport community's recognition that this distinction matters, and that the answer cannot always be left to the discretion of financially incentivised participants.
