Systematic herd health management transforms welfare monitoring from reactive to proactive. Rather than treating individual sick animals when problems become obvious, herd health management programmes identify risk factors, monitor welfare indicators across the herd, and intervene before conditions become clinically severe. The welfare benefit is earlier treatment of genuine disease and prevention of conditions that cause significant suffering. Lameness, mastitis, metabolic disease, and respiratory conditions are all amenable to this approach — their prevalence in well-managed herds is significantly lower than in herds without systematic monitoring.
