How scientists measure positive emotions in farm animals and what validated indicators of positive affective states look like in practice.
Positive emotion measurement represents the scientific frontier of farm animal welfare assessment. The challenge is moving from indicators of suffering — which are relatively straightforward to identify — to indicators of positive states, which require more sophisticated approaches. Cognitive bias testing has been validated across multiple farm species and provides reliable evidence of underlying emotional state. More practically, ear posture monitoring, play behaviour frequency, and qualitative assessment of overall behavioural expression provide accessible indicators of positive welfare that can be used in field conditions. Farms that monitor both negative and positive indicators have a more complete picture of their animals' welfare state and more information about what management changes actually improve rather than merely reduce harm.
