What welfare research has found about European sea bass and how this informs better aquaculture practices.
Sea bass welfare research is developing in the context of a species farmed at significant scale in the Mediterranean with historically limited welfare oversight. The combination of clear stress responses to poor conditions, the availability of non-invasive monitoring approaches, and the commercial incentive of better product quality from less stressed fish creates a favourable environment for welfare improvement. The research challenge is developing validated welfare indicators appropriate for net cage systems where individual fish monitoring is difficult and group-level assessment must substitute for individual observation. As this science develops, it provides the evidence base for certification requirements and management protocol improvements that could improve welfare for hundreds of millions of individual sea bass annually.
