Feline tooth resorption prevention is limited by incomplete understanding of the condition's cause. Unlike dental caries in humans, where sugar and bacterial plaque are clear causal factors, the drivers of resorption in cats are less well understood. Current prevention strategies focus on optimised nutrition and regular monitoring — feeding dental health diets, providing appropriate calcium-phosphorus balance, and conducting regular dental radiography to detect early lesions before they cause significant pain. For cats that have already developed one resorptive lesion, the most important preventive welfare action is regular monitoring for additional lesions, since early detection and prompt extraction prevents prolonged suffering from advanced resorption.
