Positive welfare for cattle goes beyond preventing disease and injury to actively enabling cattle to experience pleasure, play, and satisfaction of their natural behavioral needs.
Traditional animal welfare frameworks focused primarily on preventing negative states — disease, injury, hunger. The positive welfare framework asks a more demanding question: are animals able to experience pleasurable, rewarding, and species-appropriate positive states? For cattle, this means access to pasture for grazing, social stability, opportunities for play especially in younger animals, and management that avoids chronic stress. Producers who actively pursue positive welfare indicators tend to have healthier, more productive herds — demonstrating that good welfare and good farming are complementary rather than conflicting goals.
