Sea bass and striped bass are popular farmed fish species whose welfare depends on appropriate stocking densities, water quality, and handling protocols throughout the production cycle.
Farmed bass welfare depends on managing the entire production chain from egg to harvest with attention to fish-specific stress responses and behavioral needs. High stocking densities cause chronic stress, suppress immune function, and increase injury from abrasion and aggression. Poor water quality — particularly low dissolved oxygen — causes physiological distress and in severe cases mass mortalities that represent both welfare and production failures. Sea bass are sensitive, relatively fast-moving fish that suffer significantly from rough handling. Industry adoption of water-based electrical stunning before slaughter has improved end-of-life welfare but implementation remains inconsistent across producers.
