Dog sports can represent excellent welfare enrichment when appropriate to the individual dog, conducted with positive training methods, and managed to prevent injury. The dog's enthusiastic participation — approaching the equipment with a wagging tail and offering behaviors voluntarily — is the clearest indicator that sport enriches rather than stresses the animal. Welfare concerns arise when competitive pressure leads to training of injured dogs, use of punishment to achieve compliance, pushing young dogs into high-impact activities before growth plates close, or selection of breeds with conformations incompatible with athletic demands. A simple welfare test: does your dog try to drag you toward the training space, or does it show reluctance and require coercion?
