Pen design is one of the most impactful but most overlooked welfare determinants in pig production. The same number of pigs in differently designed pens can have dramatically different welfare outcomes. Bedded solid floors allow comfort resting, rooting, and natural elimination behavior. Long pen shapes with multiple access points to feeders and drinkers reduce competitive resource exclusion. Visual barriers allow subordinate animals to avoid dominants, reducing chronic social stress. Enrichment materials including straw, chains with substrates, and manipulation objects satisfy behavioral needs that otherwise drive aggression and stereotypies. The cost of welfare-positive pen redesign is modest compared to the welfare return, and frequently delivers production benefits through reduced fighting injuries and better growth efficiency.
