Farmed rabbit slaughter practices are poorly regulated in most countries, with stunning standards significantly lower than those for other farm animals.
Rabbit slaughter welfare suffers from the same obscurity as rabbit farming more broadly. Regulatory frameworks that require stunning for pigs, cattle, and poultry often have no equivalent requirements for rabbits. On-farm slaughter without oversight or stunning is common in small-scale rabbit production. The welfare harm is real but invisible: millions of rabbits die each year without the basic protection afforded to other farmed species. Advocacy and regulatory reform are urgently needed.
