Welfare science is moving beyond measuring harm to identifying positive experiences in cattle. Positive welfare indicators help farms demonstrate and improve what animals actually experience.
Traditional welfare assessment focused almost exclusively on the five freedoms — minimizing hunger, pain, fear, and distress. While essential, this approach can miss positive experiences that distinguish a good life from merely a tolerable one. Cattle are capable of positive emotional states including curiosity, play, and social bonding. Farms that actively foster these states — through outdoor access, social stability, positive human interaction, and environmental complexity — achieve meaningfully better welfare than those merely avoiding harm.
