Pig Positive Reinforcement Training

Positive reinforcement training in pigs improves welfare, reduces handling stress, and demonstrates their cognitive abilities. Its use in commercial settings is growing.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Positive reinforcement training reveals the cognitive capacity of pigs while simultaneously improving their welfare. A pig trained to approach, stand still for examination, or enter a pen voluntarily experiences the procedure very differently from one that is chased, shouted at, or physically forced. The welfare benefit is twofold: reduced acute stress during procedures, and the chronic benefit of having a positive rather than fearful relationship with humans. Training also benefits stockperson wellbeing — managing calm, cooperative animals is a better work experience.
