Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID/Cushings) is the most common endocrine disorder in older horses. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve welfare outcomes.
PPID is a treatable condition whose welfare impact depends heavily on whether it is diagnosed early and managed proactively. A horse with undiagnosed PPID deteriorates progressively — losing muscle, becoming laminitic, and suffering the discomfort of a permanently abnormal hormonal environment. Pergolide treatment can reverse many of these changes and dramatically improve quality of life. The welfare case for annual testing of horses over 15 is strong: early diagnosis enables early treatment and prevents the worst welfare consequences.
