Lighting management in poultry production has significant welfare implications. Evidence-based lighting programs support natural behaviors, reduce stress, and improve health outcomes.
Lighting management is an underappreciated welfare lever in poultry production. Chickens have more complex light perception than humans, making lighting quality and schedule welfare-relevant in ways that are not intuitively obvious. Continuous light suppresses natural rest behavior and is a form of chronic stress. Natural light access supports circadian rhythms, promotes foraging behavior, and is associated with better immune function. The welfare gap between minimal compliance lighting and genuine welfare-positive lighting management is significant.
