Equine Metabolic Syndrome is increasingly common in domestic horses. Evidence-based management prevents the most serious welfare consequence — laminitis — through dietary and management strategies.
EMS management is fundamentally about preventing laminitis — a condition of such severity that it can end a horse's life or require euthanasia for pain control. The management interventions needed are behavioral and environmental: dietary restriction, exercise, and removal from rich pasture. These interventions conflict with the natural equine lifestyle and require significant owner commitment. Welfare-centered EMS management accepts these trade-offs explicitly, prioritizing long-term health over short-term freedom at the cost that chronic laminitis represents.
