Reducing antibiotic use in pig production requires welfare-positive alternatives that address disease risk without the resistance consequences of routine prophylactic use.
Antibiotic stewardship and pig welfare are substantially aligned rather than in tension. The disease burden that drives antibiotic use — respiratory infections, enteric disease, skin conditions — reflects welfare problems including overcrowding, early weaning, poor air quality, and inadequate nutrition. Improving welfare conditions reduces disease incidence and therefore antibiotic requirements. This alignment means welfare investment is simultaneously resistance prevention. Farms that demonstrate lowest antibiotic use typically also demonstrate best welfare outcomes across multiple indicators.
