Donkeys used for work in low- and middle-income countries often face severe welfare challenges, but targeted interventions can dramatically improve their lives and livelihoods of the families who depend on them.
Working donkeys occupy a unique position as animals whose welfare is deeply intertwined with human livelihoods in some of the world's poorest communities. Welfare interventions that are culturally sensitive, practical, and paired with education about animal needs are most effective. Simple improvements in harnessing, hoof care, access to water, and body condition monitoring can dramatically reduce suffering at low cost.
