Bit discomfort from poor fitting, inappropriate design, or harsh rider hands is a common and underrecognised source of oral pain in ridden horses.
Bit-related pain is among the most widespread and underacknowledged welfare issues in equestrian sport. The horse's mouth is a highly sensitive structure, and ill-fitting or harsh bit application causes acute and chronic discomfort that impairs performance and welfare simultaneously. Welfare-positive equitation prioritises soft, consistent rein contact, appropriate bit selection, and recognition that resistance and evasion are often pain responses requiring investigation rather than correction through increased coercion.
