Abalone are farmed marine molluscs whose welfare status is uncertain but whose scale of production and stress responses warrant consideration.
Abalone occupy a position similar to bivalves in welfare assessments — current evidence does not strongly support significant suffering capacity, but the science is evolving. They are more neurologically complex than bivalves but less so than cephalopods or vertebrates. The welfare precautionary principle suggests avoiding unnecessary pain during harvest and handling, while the limited evidence base means abalone welfare is not a high priority relative to clearly sentient species. Good farm management primarily targets production outcomes but also incidentally limits unnecessary animal stress.
