Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a rapid, life-threatening emergency in large and giant breed dogs that causes extreme suffering and is partially preventable.

Welfare Considerations

GDV causes some of the most acute suffering of any domestic dog emergency. The combination of gut distension, impaired blood flow, and cardiovascular collapse creates extreme pain and distress in the hours before treatment or death. The welfare case for preventive gastropexy in high-risk breeds is strong — the procedure eliminates most of the risk of this catastrophic event, and is increasingly offered as a preventive procedure at the time of spaying or neutering. Every prevented GDV episode avoids a period of extreme animal suffering.

What You Can Do

Discuss preventive gastropexy with your vet if you have a large, deep-chested breed dog.
Avoid feeding large meals before exercise and wait at least an hour after meals before vigorous activity.
Know the signs of GDV: distended abdomen, unsuccessful retching, anxiety, and cardiovascular collapse.
Treat suspected GDV as an emergency — do not wait and see; get to a vet immediately.
