Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are the most common external parasite of domestic cats and dogs worldwide.

Welfare Considerations

Flea infestation causes persistent, intense pruritus that disrupts sleep, normal grooming, and social behaviour in affected cats. Cats with flea allergy dermatitis can self-traumatise severely, developing raw skin lesions from continuous scratching and biting. The welfare cost is ongoing and cumulative. Consistent year-round prevention is the most welfare-positive approach — preventing infestation is far less welfare-costly than treating an established infestation in both the cat and the home environment.

What You Can Do

Use veterinary-prescribed flea prevention year-round for cats with outdoor access or in multi-pet households.
Treat the home environment (vacuuming, appropriate sprays) simultaneously with treating the animal — the home harbours 95% of the flea lifecycle.
Seek veterinary assessment for cats showing signs of flea allergy dermatitis — treatment requires addressing both allergy and infestation.
Never use dog flea products on cats — permethrin-containing products for dogs are toxic and potentially fatal to cats.
