Welfare Considerations

Water-related dog welfare involves both the welfare benefits of swimming as enrichment and exercise, and the welfare costs of water hazards when safety is inadequate. Many dogs love swimming and benefit enormously from the low-impact exercise — particularly those with arthritis or weight issues. The welfare task is enabling safe swimming enjoyment rather than eliminating it through risk aversion. This means supervising water access, knowing local hazards, carrying a life jacket for open-water excursions, and checking water quality before allowing access.

What You Can Do

Check Environment Agency and local authority alerts for blue-green algae before allowing dogs to swim in natural water.
Use a canine life jacket for dogs on boats or swimming in rivers and tidal water where currents are unpredictable.
Monitor dogs in cold water and recall them if they show signs of cold stress — shivering, loss of coordination.
Teach dogs a reliable recall from water in case currents or other hazards require emergency exit.
