Positive welfare science has shifted the welfare conversation from purely negative (preventing suffering) to genuinely affirmative (enabling flourishing). Farm animals in good welfare conditions express curiosity, play, social bonding, and contentment. These positive states are not anthropomorphic projections but measurable biological phenomena — playful calves, exploring piglets, and socially engaged hens are expressing genuine positive affect. Welfare standards that aim only to reduce negative experiences miss the opportunity to promote positive lives for farm animals, which is the fuller welfare goal.
