Mussels are farmed in suspension culture systems that differ significantly from their natural intertidal habitat — welfare implications are limited but warrant consideration.
Mussel welfare considerations are minimal by current evidence — the nervous system does not support the pain processing pathways associated with suffering in more complex animals. From a welfare-prioritisation perspective, mussel farming represents a relatively low-concern animal protein with genuine environmental benefits. For consumers concerned about animal welfare across their entire diet, sustainably farmed mussels offer a food choice with very limited welfare concern relative to virtually any other animal product available. This does not preclude continued attention to evolving sentience research.
