Welfare Considerations

Gastroenteritis causes real, if usually short-lived, welfare harm — abdominal discomfort, nausea, and the distress of repeated vomiting and diarrhoea. The welfare priority is maintaining hydration and comfort during resolution. Most cases resolve within 48-72 hours with appropriate supportive management. The welfare alarm is raised by blood in the stool or vomit, rapid deterioration, suspected toxic ingestion, or dogs that are very young, old, or immune-compromised — these require prompt veterinary assessment rather than home management.

What You Can Do

Offer small amounts of water frequently to dogs with gastroenteritis — dehydration is the primary welfare concern.
Feed small amounts of bland food (cooked chicken and rice) once vomiting has settled for 12-24 hours.
Seek veterinary assessment for bloody diarrhoea or vomiting, rapid deterioration, or prolonged illness beyond 48 hours.
Avoid anti-diarrhoeal medications without veterinary advice — some are unsafe for dogs and can mask serious conditions.
