Welfare Considerations

Dogs with liver disease may experience nausea, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, and in advanced cases neurological signs from hepatic encephalopathy. Pain management, anti-nausea medication, and appropriate dietary support form the welfare foundation of treatment. Liver-specific diets with modified protein sources reduce encephalopathy risk. In dogs with copper storage disease, chelation therapy and low-copper diets can stabilise or improve liver function substantially.
