Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most common presentations in dogs. Most cases resolve with supportive care, but some require urgent veterinary attention.

Welfare Considerations

Dogs with gastroenteritis experience nausea, abdominal pain, weakness, and the distress of repeated vomiting and diarrhoea. Mild cases can be managed at home with a 12-hour fast followed by small amounts of bland food. However, bloody diarrhoea, prolonged symptoms, lethargy, or signs of dehydration warrant prompt veterinary attention. Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis requires intravenous fluids and progresses rapidly without treatment.

What You Can Do

Withhold food but maintain water access for 12 hours in mild vomiting or diarrhoea
Reintroduce food gradually with small amounts of plain boiled chicken and rice
Seek immediate veterinary attention for bloody diarrhoea, collapse, or signs of pain
Prevent dietary indiscretion by securing bins and limiting access to novel food sources
Ensure all dogs are vaccinated against parvovirus, a preventable cause of severe gastroenteritis
