Welfare Considerations

GDV causes rapid deterioration from severe pain and shock. Time from onset to surgery is critical; survival rates decline rapidly without prompt intervention. Dogs in the hours before a full volvulus experience extreme abdominal distension and unsuccessful retching that is deeply distressing. Preventive strategies including gastropexy, slow feeders, restricted exercise around meals, and feeding two smaller meals daily substantially reduce risk in predisposed breeds.
