Snow leopards are solitary, mountain-adapted felids whose welfare in captivity requires specific environmental and management considerations.
Snow leopard welfare in zoos is supported by cool, complex enclosures with elevated vantage points, rocky substrates, and choice of shade. They are generally less tolerant of human disturbance than some other felids, and off-exhibit retreat areas are important. Breeding programmes have been successful in maintaining genetic diversity. Enrichment focuses on predatory behaviour using puzzle feeders, scent enrichment, and whole prey presentation to support natural behaviour sequences.
