Wolverines are among the least-studied large carnivores in the northern hemisphere. Their welfare and conservation present unique challenges due to low population density and vast territories.
Wolverines caught in traps for fur or predator control experience significant suffering if traps are not checked frequently. Leg-hold traps in particular cause injury, pain, and distress. Lethal control in conflict situations is often not justified by the relatively minor livestock losses attributable to wolverines. Coexistence tools including livestock guardian dogs and foxhound exclusion can reduce conflict. Climate vulnerability adds urgency to conservation efforts.
