IVDD causes pain and paralysis in predisposed breeds. Early recognition and appropriate treatment minimises welfare compromise and improves outcomes.
Dogs with acute IVDD experience severe pain that is frequently underrecognised by owners. Spinal pain in dogs can manifest as reluctance to move, crying, posture changes, and loss of normal behaviour. Paralysed dogs without deep pain perception require emergency surgery within 24-48 hours for any chance of recovery. Conservative management of painful but ambulatory dogs requires genuinely strict cage rest to allow disc healing. Long-term management includes weight management and avoiding high-impact activities.
