Solitary guinea pig housing is a common and significant welfare failure. The animals vocalise, lose appetite, and show chronic stress when isolated. Providing a compatible companion is the single most impactful welfare improvement available to guinea pig owners. Neutered male-female pairs or same-sex pairs introduced young are most manageable. When one of a bonded pair dies, a replacement companion should be sought promptly as isolated guinea pigs decline rapidly in health and behaviour.
