Sweet itch is a chronic, progressive condition where horses become increasingly sensitised over time without adequate prevention. The itch-scratch cycle causes skin damage, secondary infection, hair loss, and permanent scarring in severely affected individuals. Comprehensive prevention from early spring prevents sensitisation progression. The welfare benefit of consistently applied prevention — including appropriate rugging, stabling during midge activity peaks, and insect repellent use — is substantial compared to treating established flares. Emerging immunotherapy approaches may offer longer-term relief in the future.
