Rabbit farming is a significant global sector but one of the least regulated for animal welfare. Emerging cage-free standards represent important welfare progress.
Farmed rabbits in conventional cages experience extreme behavioural deprivation. Rabbits are active, social animals with strong locomotion and burrowing motivations that are completely frustrated in wire cages. High rates of skeletal abnormalities, respiratory disease, and stress-related behaviours characterise intensive rabbit farming. Alternative park and colony systems with adequate space, enrichment, and social opportunity represent significant welfare improvements. Consumer demand for higher welfare rabbit products and regulatory reform are essential for progress.
